Culture Matters: Why A-Players Won’t Work for B-Companies

Every day I see culture, and culture matters: A-Players Won’t Work for B-Companies.

In 17 years as an executive recruiter, I’ve seen some corporate cultures that are horrible, and I’ve seen some that are great.

There have been some that I just can’t work with…  I remember one where the CEO was a colossal jerk and very micromanaging.  Everyone hated working there, but they did.  And the CEO would always exclaim “get me good people” but not understanding why that was a very challenging task.

When he was replaced by a strong leader the stock magically tripled.  The new CEO is not perfect, but he creates a strong culture and supports his people, and the progress is wonderful to watch.

Here are some realities:

  • A Players will NOT go to work for B companies, unless they are put in charge to turn them around.
  • B companies will not hire A players.  A Players stir the pot and challenge the status quo. Marginal leaders can’t handle the challenges.
  • A Players want to work with A Players. They can’t stand carrying the weight of those who can’t, or don’t want to, keep up.

As an executive, understand what you want.  If you’re an aggressive, in the weeds, get your hands dirty type personality then a big company may not be for you. I’ve seen a lot of mid-management executives struggle in the “process” of larger organizations.

On the flip side, if you’re more comfortable in guiding the division of a big company then be very careful about moving to a smaller one. Many F500 executives have moved to 50 person organizations only to struggle with the ambiguity.  Are you truly ready for a start-up?

Most important, before one looks “out” it is best that they look “in”.

What is my personality geared towards, in what environments will I thrive, what types of organizations am I suited for.

As for me?…   Where do you think I fit?
